Abstract (EN)
Esengül ÇAMÖZÜ, This research is a descriptive work, made to identify the knowledge and practices of the medical waste collection, transportation and storage that cause significant risk about infection reasoned by disinfection staff, working as employees, at the same time, dealing with medical waste business at Gülhane Military Medical Academy Education and Research Hospital Cleaning Company. In the study, all employees were included in research without sample selection (n=99). The data was collected from the literature research, Regulation for Control of Medical Waste and questionnaire and observation forms with the help of expert opinion .Observation form consists of 5 chapters and 36 process created in order to observing practices and preventive use of employee during the collection, transport and storage from the medical waste units. Participants were observed twice with at least 15-day interval and then a questionnaire was administered. Participants?s written consent were obtained informing about research during the interview .71.7% of individuals, participating in research, are male and 28.3% of them are female respectively. While the mean of age is 28.9 in research group, 3.7 years is average interval of working. 93.9% of the individuals have Hepatitis B vaccine and 35.4% of them have tetanus vaccine made. All of the participants (100%) were work-related training.All the individuals, participated in the research, warned that they could have infection from all medical wastes, and 36.4% of them stated of being in contact with cutting, drilling materials contacted with patient fluids and at least once wounded. The most common errors that are determined in regulations of medical waste procedures; the percentage of using disposable gloves is 47%, ignorance the usage of protective masks and bones (43% & 51%), pouring medical waste bags that are not in suitable fullness ratio (42%), to ignore washing hands after these procedures are applied (49%) and while transportation occurs usage of transfer station is 18%.Katılımcıların %96.97'si ankette tıbbi atıkları topladıktan sonra ellerin yıkanması gerektiğini ifade ederken yapılan gözlemlerde %51.5 inin ellerini yıkadıkları belirlenmiştAt the end of the research, it is recommended that, in service education of medical waste staff,Bu durum çalışanların sağlığının korunmasında bilgilendirmenin yeterli olmadığı, eğitimlerin sık tekrarlanması, doğru davranışların pekiştirilmesi, görsel uyaranların kullanılması ve bazı önlemlerin alınması gereğine işaret etmektedir. Hastanelerde her aşamada kontrolü yapılan etkin bir atık yönetimi planı oluşturulması ve hastanede çalışan sağlığı ve güvenliği birimi kurulması önerilmektedir. the importance of waste collection,transportation and storage should be pointed out depending on the principles that are located in regulations, on the other hand, there should an efficient waste management plan, that should be controlled in every stage, and a health and security unit for hospital employee be generated in hospitals .
