Investigation of susceptibility of some hospital isolated bacteria to selected antiseptics/ disinfectants

Abstract (EN)

-64- VIII. YABANCI DİLDE ÖZET In this study, 81 isolates which were isolated from patients who applied to Hacettepe and Gazi University Hospitals were used for determining the susceptibilities of bacteria to commonly used disinfectants and anticeptics. Savlon, chlorhexidine and sodium hypochlorite that are most widely used disinfectants and anticeptics in hospitals were choosed and their effectiveness in-use concentrations were investigated. Quantitative suspension test was used for evaluating in-vitro antimicrobial effectiveness of disinfectants and anticeptics agents. In suspension test, bacterial suspension was added to disinfectant solution in certain concentration. After specified exposure period (5 min.) reaction mixture was added to neutralizing medium and removed to agar plates by the surface-plating technique and colony forming units were counted after an incubation time. Disinfectants were replaced by sterile distilled water for control and the whole procedure was repeated. Microbicidal effect was calculated by using the number of colony forming units, expressed as logarithm, for disinfectant and control. The results in > log-i05 reduction were often estimated as an indication of acceptable efficacy. Overall, it was found that savlon and clorhexidine in-use concentration were effective against the all isolates, and sodium-65- hypochlorite was generally satisfactory against Klebsiella spp. and Acinetobacter spp. and especially P. aeruginosa, E. coli, E.cloacae spp., S. aures at 1/50 dilutions. Moreover, it was observed that microbicidal effect decreased at 1/500 dilutions, but this effect increased longer contact time (15 min.). In conclusion, it was determined that savlon and chlohexidine were convinient as disinfectants in hospitals. In addition, it was revealed that sodium hypochlorite usage should be preferred at higher concentrations.
