Investigation of Turkish composers works in the Air Force Band repertoire in terms of tone, mode and makam

In the concerts given by the Air Force Bands for various reasons, it is evaluated that the conductors have problems with the nature, classification and preference of the repertoire, and that the performers are not sufficiently equipped to perform the determined works. These problems and deficiencies should be eliminated to ensure that the personnel working in the field work more efficiently. This thesis, which includes tonal, modal and maqam analyses of the works of Turkish composers in the repertoire of the Air Force Band, aims to facilitate the band conductors in understanding and classifying the works and accordingly in choosing the repertoire to be performed. The most accurate and effective performance of the selected works is also among the objectives of the study. In the first part of the thesis, the basic concepts within the scope of the research are explained, in this sense, firstly the instruments and instrument groups that make up the military bands are discussed, and then the histories of these ensembles are given. Finally, the concepts of "tonality", "modality" and "maqamality", which constitute a fundamental place in the analysis of works, are discussed in this chapter. The second part consists of the listing of original and translated books written with theses, articles and papers on the analysis of the works that make up the marching band repertoire. The information given about all these studies is also included in the content of the chapter. In the third and final part, three pieces of Turkish composers' works in the repertoire of the Air Force Band, which were determined by the survey method, are analyzed in terms of tonal, modal and maqamal aspects. The chapter ends with the discussion, conclusion and recommendations by using the purpose, importance, scope, limitations, assumptions, methodology and findings of the research.
