ABSTRACT MsC THESIS TOWEL PRODUCTION AND INVESTIGATION OF THE PARAMETERS THAT AFFECT THE PRODUCT QUALITY Belkıs ZERVENT DEPARTMENT OF TEXTILE ENGINEERING INSTITUTE OF NATUREL AND APPLIED SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Erdem KOÇ Year: 2002, Page: 201 Jury: Prof. Dr. Erdem KOÇ Prof.Dr. Beşir ŞAHİN Assist. Prof. Dr. Nihat ÇELİK In this study, the production process of woven towel and towel fabrics from yarn to clothing were investigated. Also, their basic physical properties and their specifications with respect to end uses were determined. For this purpose, the towel samples taken from well-known firms of Turkey (42 samples) were tested in order to determine their performance. It was aimed to inventigate the relation between physical properties (such as pile highness, weight per square-meter) and the production parameters (i.e. the dyestuff and softener), hydrophilic property, softness, dimension variation after washing and colour fastness. Some of the performed tests results are given below. The increase in weight per m2 and pile highness cause to decrease in softness. It is seen that the velvet-like towels are softer than those of the other types. The piece dyed towels are softer than the yarn dyed towels. The results showed that the increase in pile highness causes to increase in hydrophilic property. It is not found any clear relation between the hydrophilic property and weight per m2. The effect of softener on hydrophilic property is more dominant. The dimension variation after washing is directly proportional with pile highness, on the contrary it is inversly proportional with weight per m2. In general the towels which have low hydrophilic property had higher colour fastness obtained from the results of all performed tests. Additionaly, the fastness to perspiration of the samples was higher than the fastness that of the sea- water. Key Words: Towel fabric, softness, hydrophilic property, colour fastness VI
