Abstract (EN)
Karagöz and Hacivat, the main charecters of the famous play Karagöz which has been a source of joy and sometimes a source of lampoon for Turkish people, have influenced all the nation for decades. Some of the Turkish comic books ,who are aware of this act converted the play to a type of comics. Ali Fuat, who has published his comics in a comic book called Karagöz in 1908 which was influenced by the famous play of the Traditional Turkish Theatre is known as the first Turkish caricaturist. In the comic book of Ali Fuat, the scene is represented as a comic and Karagöz and Hacivat are the two main characters. His comics has tried to voice the conflict mentioned in the lead artical. In the these the Battle of Gallipoli who took place between 3rd of August 1914 and 10th August 1915 has been analyzed via the comics inspired by the play, Karagöz. In 1915, Karagöz was the only comic book which was being published. We can say that "Karagöz" (the comic book) was the only observor of the Battle of Gallipoli. The Battle of Gallipoli wasn't just a battle in air, land, nor in the sea. It is a battle that also took place within the lines of the printed media. The weapons weren't the only power. Words were even more powerful than the bombs when they were used at the right time and at the right place. Moreover, there was a more powerful thing in the hands of the printed media: The power of image combined with the power of words, it was called as "comics". And the Karagöz comics aimed to give people hope. In order to attain that aim, the caricaturists took advantage of the power of words and litterature within the dialogues of Hacivat and Karagöz. Key words: Traditional Turkish theater, humor, comics, the Battle of Gallipoli, Karagöz.
