Dictionary of Hazâ Kitâb Leyla and Mecnun's Story (Contextual index and functional dictionary)

Language is the identity code of a nation. Classical Turkish Literature is the product of a civilisation has ruled more than six centuries. Turkish, Arabic and Persian Literature have created the aesthetics of Classical Turkish Literature that has been consisted in the geographies and different ages by interacting each other. Interpreting the world of meaning of the aesthetics, absolutely contributes the studies of Classical Turkish Literature. Today's readers have problems with the intelligibility of this deep-rooted literature for many different reasons. One of the reasons is the fact that the cultural traces in the background of the literature are unknown, as well as the different language. In this context, TEBDIZ (Historical and Literary Texts Contextual Index and Functional Dictionary) is an electronic system that collects the semantic world of Classical Turkish literature in a common pool in order to contribute to the understanding of Turkish language and culture. The words in Hazâ Kitâb Leylâ and Mecnun's Story, which were uploaded to the system as a transcript, were examined one by one, and the proverbs, idioms, prayer words and cultural language in the work were revealed, and the meaning of each of them was given together with the meaning it gained in the text. Arabic and Persian compositions and word groups formed with auxiliary verbs were examined as a whole, and the meanings indicated in the text were tried to be given in a more concrete and understandable way with this method. Contextual index and functional dictionary are based on examining the language elements in literary texts in context. This study is a dictionary presentation of 15428 testimonies of Hazâ Kitâb Leyla and Mecnun's Story. This dictionary in question includes both the contextual index and the functional dictionary of Hazâ Kitâb Leylâ and Mecnun's Story, as well as the tradition of its era, its understanding of art and society. Although interpretation is the basis of the study, the fact that the name of the poet/author was not written on the work has given us the opportunity to carefully access the social concepts of the period by following the stylistic signs of the author, based on his artistic nature. In this respect, social traditions and mazmuns etc., that have been determined in the study, were included with their witnesses. In the work, it is elaborated to give the dictionary meaning of the words in the context of the metaphoric dictionary, in connection with the meanings gained in the text in connection with the before and after. In the work, it can be said that the author created an original style by knowing the tradition as the mainstay. In this study, in terms of showing the importance of the story of Leylâ and Mecnûn from the history of literature to the present, its artistic and historical course has been tried to be given in a historical panorama in which cultural geographies and which poets have passed through. It is thought that our study will be useful for the contextual index, functional dictionary and stylistic studies -to the historical dictionary of Turkish- in the axis of the art of the story and its author and the cultural projections of the tradition. It will be very important and meaningful in terms of revealing, determining and reflecting the rich vocabulary of our national language and culture.
