Preparetion of Hdtma modified zeolite and adsorption of nitrate from aques solutions

In this thesis, surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ) and removal of nitrate (NO- 3) out of water have been studied. In the studies, Clinoptilolite as a natural mineral, which is found in Gördes, Manisa, has been used. In order to modify the surfaces of these minerals, hexadecyldesimethylammonium-bromide (HDTMA) salt, which is of straight hydrocarbon chained quaternary amine group, has been used. The adsorption of HDTMA on zeolite has been observed. In order to achieve this aim such measurements, monitoring and analysis techniques as FTIR, AFM, DTA-TGA, DSC and zeta potential have been used. As a result of this, the ion change of HDTMA adsorption has been formed by electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction. The effect of zeolite upon zeta potential with different type and valance of electrolytes have been observed and it has shown that only in FeCl3 and Al(NO3)3 zeta potential has changed from negative to positive. For the NO3 adsorption upon SMZ, 5-250 mg/l NO3 solution has been prepared for a start while adsorbed nitrate amount at the natural pH is 2,32 mg/g, this amount at pH=2 is 10,500 mg/g. The availibity of data of nitrate adsorption to langmuir and Freundlich models has been investigated and it has shown that the result matches Freundlich adsorption model. It has been designated that the kinetic data is suitable to the pseudo-second type model. Keywords: Natural Zeolite, Adsorption, Surfactant-Modified Zeolite, Nitrate
