The objective of this study is to investigate the smoking or nonsmoking situation ofthe doctors working at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, and the smoking behavior ofthose who do smoke based on certain variables.The research has been conducted during the 2005-2006 academic year, and it coveredevery doctor on duty at the faculty of medicine. 488 doctors (53.7%) out of a total of 908have fully responded to the survey. Out of 488 doctors participating in the survey, 48.8%(238) were female and 51.7% (250) were male. 19% of the female participants and 31% ofthe males were determined to be smokers. 11% of the female doctors and 12% of the maledoctors had quitted smoking. Majority of the smokers (19%) were in the age range of 41-50.28% of the married doctors were found to be smokers while 58% never smoked and14% gave up smoking. Married doctors have a higher percentage of smoking. The highestpercentage of smoking (46%) is found at the surgical sciences department. 50% of theresident doctors were smokers.30% of the doctors thought the most effective quitting technique was ?giving upsuddenly.? While 47% of the doctors warned their patients not to smoke all the time, thepercentage of those who occasionally warned them is 48, and 5% did not warn their patients.70% of the doctors who smoke started smoking before becoming a doctor. 44% of thesmokers consume more than half and less than a full package of cigarettes. Male smokersconsumed more than the female ones.About 84% of the doctors consumed imported brands, while 16% used local brands.36% of the doctors stated that it was not easy to hold themselves from smoking in the smokefree zones. About 83% of the smokers ask for cigarette from others when they ran out oftheirs.65% docdors want to quit smoking. 46% have tried giving up at least once. 29% thinksthat they cannot give up. 77% of the smoker doctors have been smoking for more than 8years. 54% smoke in front of their children and 46% ?occasionally? smoke in front of them.
