Abstract (EN)

SUMMARYA Comparasion of Sleep Quality in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis PatientsPatientsSleep disturbances such as sleep-onset insomnia, frequent awekaning, sleep maintenanceinsomnia and restless legs syndrome are extremely common in chronic dialysis patients. Those additional problems to their chronic disease appear to have significant negative effectson quality of life and functional healt status. In patients having chronic dialysis treatment withhemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, the etiology and parameters of sleep disorders aresimilar. These sleeping problems added to their chronic disease are further decreasing theirfunctional capacity and life quality. This study aimed to assess sleep quality and to determinethe factors affecting on it, and also to investigate whether a difference in sleep qualitiesbetween hemodialysis and periton dialysis patients.A total of 102 end stage renal failure (ESRF) patients, 52 hemodialysis patients (F/M;23/29) mean ages 55.5±14.6, 50 peritoneal dialysis patients (F/M; 2 8 /22) mean ages51.5±18.1 are enrolled the study. Median dialysis duration was 2 years for hemodialysispatients, and 3.2 years for peritoneal dialysis patients. In order to assess their sleep qualitiesthe questionnaire of Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is performed to all patients. Thesleep qualities assessed as PSQI were found bad (global score >5) in 88% (46/52) ofhemodialysis patients and in 78% (39/50) of peritoneal dialysis patients. No significantdifference was found between two groups according to sleep quality.Additionally, the relation between global sleep score and the other parameters isassessed. There were significant correlations with global sleep score and age, duration ofdialysis, albumin and ferritin levels, respectively (r=0.289 p=0.003, r=0.248 p=0.012, r=0.238p=0.016, r=-0.203 p=0.041, respectively). In lineer regression analysis, age and duration ofdialysis are found independent factors affecting on global sleep score. We assessed the relations between sleep quality and the other parameters, also. Therewere weak but significant correlations between ?poor sleep quality? and age, the presence ofdiabetes mellitus and albumin levels, respectively (r=0.279 p=0.004, r=0.201 p=0.043 andr=0.231 p=0.019, respectively). In logistic regression analysis, only age is found as anindependent factor on ?poor sleep quality?.In conclusion, in each group, when assessed by PSQI, it is found that there is nodifference between sleep qualities. However, sleep qualities are found to be affectednegatively especially with the age increases.Key words: Hemodialysis, Peritoneal dialysis, Sleep, Sleep Quality, PSQI
