3SUMMARYComparison Of Life Quality Of Chronic Renal Failure Patients OnHaemodialysis And Peritoneal DialysisThis study was made for finding out the life quality and its determinantsin chronic renal failure patients who are being treated by haemodialysis or peritonealdialysis. The aim of this study plan was to reach all the patients on a chronichemodialysis and peritoneal dialysys treatment at Antalya Government Hospitalwithin the period of 15.05.2005-15.08.2005. Investigation was operated on 187dialysis patients undergoing HD (n=77) and PD at the Antalya State Hospitals. Dataswere collected from a questionnaire form and an SF-36 life quality scale. The lifequality assessment was made by using SF-36 Evaluation Test and average physical(PC) and mental components (MC) were calculated. PC and MC scores werecompared with the type of dialysis performed, serum albumin level, sex, age, andeducational status.Data were recorded asan average standard deviation and analysıs weremade by using T-Test, ANOVA and correlation analyses. Significance level wasconsidered as p<0,005.Analysıs revealed an statistically significant correlation between lifequality and dialysis treatment of HD and PD patients and however, statisticallydifference has not been found between serum albumin levels and different types ofdialysis treatment. Correlation tests revealed a statistical significance forhaemodialysis patients as far as the PC scores are concerned, while MC scores wererevealing no significant correlation for serum albumin levels. Compared with serumalbumin levels, the PC and MC scores revealed none significant correlation forpatients undergoing PD. There was a significant correlation between the educationalstatus and PC and MC scores of haemodialysis patients. For the peritoneal dialysispatients. There was a relation between PC and educational status of patients. Both thePC and MC scores of male and female patients were found to be significantlydifferent for haemodialysis patients, while PC scores were found significantly higher4than males for peritoneal dialysis patients. The PC scores according to the age groupsof the patients revealed a significant difference for both haemodialysis and peritonealdialysis patients, while their MC scores revealed no significant difference in bothgroups. There were no significant differences for PC and MC scores betweenadministration ways of dialysis in patients treated by HD. There was no differencefound either in SF-36 scores for PC or MC in HD and PD patients according topresence of chronic diseases. Infective diseases in HD and PD patients as comparedwith MC scores of SF-36. There was a difference in PD patients while there was nocorrelation for PC scores in HD patients. The results showed that there was no significant difference in lifequalities between the patients on haemodialysis and on peritoneal dialysis. WhileMC scores were lower for males, PC scores were higher than for the females in HDpatients however MC scores were not differ for PD patients related to sex while PCscores were higher for females than males. It was realised that advance age decreasedPC scores for two patient groups but not changed MC scores. The effect of theeducational status of the patients on their life quality was significant for thehaemodialysis patients, while insignificant for patients on peritoneal dialysis. Thequality of life was not effected by administration ways of dialysis in patients treatedby HD. The quality of life of none of these patient groups were effected by chronicillness. The serum albumin level was effected by only the PC component of the lifequality score of haemodialysis patients, leaving MC one was unaffected; while nosignificantly effecting life quality in peritoneal dialysis patients. Altough anincreasein albumin level effected the life quality of HD patients positiuly, ıt did not effectMC ones and did not find any effectron on PD ones. Keywords: Hemodialysis, chronic renal failure, peritoneal dialysis, SF-36, life quality.
