Comparison of care requirements and implementations of patients with diabetes and without diabetes who get hemodialysis

This research is planned to compare the care requirements and implementations of patients with diabetes and without diabetes. The research is cross sectional type. A total of 111 people out of 122 patients (91%) who are being treated in two hemodialysis centers in central Bolu. Questionnaire and `Brief Disability Questionnaire? are used to collect data. 28,8% (n: 32) of the patients who receive hemodialysis have diabetes mellitus, they consist of mostly males (62,5% with diabetes - 55,7% without diabetes), between the ages of 50?64 (43,8% with diabetes - 36,7% without diabetes), literate/ elementary school graduates (68,8% with diabetes - 59,5% without diabetes). It is determined that chronic kidney failure mostly developed because of diabetic nephropathy (28,8%), patients with diabetes had more problems related with diet and liquid restriction than patients without diabetes because of graft or fistula, and they had more problems such nausea-vomiting and sleep disorder. There is a meaningful statistical difference among the urea, creatinin, calcium, potassium, phosphorus values of patients with diabetes and without diabetes before and after hemodialysis session. It is determined that patients with diabetes had more capability loss and more care requirement than the ones without diabetes. Based on these results, it is believed that this study may contribute to the awareness of difficulties of patients with diabetes who undergo hemodialysis in their care and treatment, to the evaluation of these difficulties and to the emphasis of the solutions to these problems for the nurses.
