Investigation of serum HSP 70, S100B and neuron specific enolase levels in hemorrhagic stroke

Abstract (EN)

Stroke is a clinical syndrome which is characterized by rapid onset of symptoms and findings of focal cerebral function loss due to vascular causes. It is the third leading cause of death worldwide and the first among diseases causing disability. In the present study, it was aimed to evaluate whether serum NSE, S100B and HSP70 levels are increased; if so, whether this increase is consistent with intracranial bleeding volume; the relationship with GCS and NIH Stroke scale; and efficiency of serum NSE, S100B and HSP70 levels in predicting prognosis.Patients aging 18 years or older presented to emergency department between May, 2011 and June, 2011 and diagnosed as non-traumatic cerebrovascular disease (CVD) according to WHO criteria were enrolled to our study. Overall, 35 patients and 32 healthy volunteer were included to the study. Blood samples were drawn to measure S100B, HSP 70 and NSE levels at the presentation to ED and 5 days after admission. GCS and NIH Stroke scale scores were calculated.In patients diagnosed as hemorrhagic CVD, NSE levels were found as 31.66±13.43 and 26.56±12.77 (p<0.01; p>0.05), while S100B levels as 0.13±0.03 and 0.13±0.04 (p<0.001; p<0.001) and HSP70 levels as 0.96±0.72 and 0.8±0.54 (p<0.01; p<0.05) in blood samples drawn on the day 0 and 5, respectively.Nöron Spesifik Enolaz, S100B and HSP70 can be used as an ease, inexpensive and objective measure alternative to simple but subjective trauma scoring systems such as GCS and NIH Stroke scale in patients with hemorrhagic CVD. They provide valuable information in prediction of prognosis and extent of injury.Keywords: Hemorrhagic stroke, NSE, S100B, HSP70
