Evaluation of the relationship between working environment andnurses' burnout levels: An example of a university hospital

This descriptive and correlational study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between working environment and nurses' burnout levels. This research was conducted with 240 nurses working at Koç University Hospital, İstanbul, between July 2021 and September 2022. Data were collected using the Nurse Information Form, Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Form (MBI–GF), and the Nursing Work Index- The Practice Environment Scale (NWI-PES). The mean age of the nurses was 28.98±4.38. Most of the nurses were female (72.9%), single (58.3%), and held bachelor's degrees (86.3%). Additionally, 15.8% of the sample worked in internal clinics, and 4.2% had worked between 5 and 9 years. More than half of the nurses (68.3%) were satisfied with their profession, and the majority (95%) had not considered leaving the institution. The mean scores of the MBI-GF sub-dimensions were as follows: Exhaustion 14.56±4.29, Depersonalization 7.05±2.05 and Competence 26.6±2.98. The overall average of the NWI-PES was 2.80±0.35. There was a statistically significant differences between the unit they work, the thought of leaving the institution and the satisfaction with the profession and the scores of the nurses in the MTE-GF Exhaustion (p=.001; p=.015; p=.001), Depersonalization (p=.001; p=.001; p=.001) and Competence (p=.003; p=.001; p=.001) sub- dimensions. A statistically significant difference was found between the NWI-PES total scores of the nurses and gender, time in the profession, thoughts of leaving the institution, and the satisfaction with the profession (p=.014; p=.020; p=.001; p=.001 respectively). The results showed that the nurses working in the institution had a low level of burnout and they had a positive working environment.
