Abstract (EN)
Work-life and mental status significantly affect the sleep quality of an individual. Sleep is considered to be an irreplaceable element of health. Disruptions in sleep quality may lead to impairment in physical and mental health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of sleep quality with general mental status and depressive symptom levels of nurses working in the State Hospital. The study was conducted by applying a sociodemographic information form prepared by the researcher, "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)", "Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI)" and "Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to 109 nurses working in the State Hospital between August 2017 and July 2018. The Kruskal-Wallis, Shapiro-Wilk's, Mann-Whitney U, All Pairwise and Spearman's correlation tests were used in the analysis of the data. The mean age of the nurses participated in the study was calculated as 31.17±8.165. Of the nurses, 58.7% (n=58) were married and 59.6% (n = 65) were working in departments other than internal and surgery units. 54 nurses participated in the study regarded their sleep quality as "very poor". It was found that there was a significant weak positive correlation between the PSQI and the BSI anxiety subscale, there was a significant weak positive correlation between the PSQI and the BSI depression subscale, there was a moderately significant positive correlation between the PSQI and the BSI negative self-appraisal subscale, there was a significant weak positive correlation between the PSQI and the BSI somatization subscale, there was a significant weak positive correlation between the PSQI and BSI hostility subscale (p<0.05). When the correlation between the total PSQI and the BDI was investigated, a significant weak positive correlation was found (p<0.05). In conclusion, it was found that the decreased sleep quality of nurses caused disruptions in their general mental statuses and an increase in their depressive symptom levels.
