The effect of nurses' teamwork attitude and professional characteristics of some professions on patient safety culture

This descriptive study was conducted on the purpose of examining the effect of nurses' teamwork attitude and professional characteristics of some professions on the perception of patient safety culture. This study was conducted between April-June 2019 with the participation of 391 nurses who were volunteer for research studies and had been working for at least six months at four different hospitals, a state hospital in Istanbul, a university hospital, a foundation university hospital and a private hospital. A survey form including, sociodemographic attributes, a teamwork attitudes scale and a patient safety culture scale, was used in order to collect data. Independent Groups Test, Mann Whitney U test, ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis test, Pearson's Correlation and Multiple Regression analysis (backward) were used. In the study, the average score of nurses' teamwork attitude was 3.32±.48 while the average score of patient safety culture perception was 3.38±.45. From the sociodemographic and professional characteristics, the perception of patient safety culture of those who are at the age of 25 or older, work at a university hospital, serve at units of management and training, have an experience of more than three years at their institutions and work on the day shift was found at high level (p.05). In addition to this, it was detected that the nurses who receive patient training for more than three hours, have a high job satisfaction, think of staying in their professions have a high level of patient safety culture perception (p.05). A positive, strong and significant relation between the nurses' scores of teamwork attitude and scores of patient safety culture was detected (p<.001). The factors affecting patient safety culture in multiple regression model were detected as teamwork attitude, the institutions in which they work, position of employees, position in which they work, age and the level of job satisfaction (R:.69, Adjusted R2: .46, F: 68.51, p: .000, Durbin Watson: 1.75). In order to create patient safety culture in nurses, there is a need to develop their teamwork attitudes and to increase their level of job satisfaction. In addition, like the nurses working in training and management positions, the other nurses' being given more responsibility and being allowed to participate in management may make a big contribution to the settling of patient safety culture.
