Determining of nurses' knowledge levels related with usage of ventrogluteal site in intramuscular injection

DETERMINING OF NURSES KNOWLEDGE LEVELS RELATED WITH USAGE OF VENTROGLUTEAL SITE IN INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTIONT his research was carried out to determine nurses? knowledge level related with usage of VG site in intramuscular injection as a descriptive.Sampling of this research consists of 283 nurses employed in intensive care units, emergency services and inpatient services in Ibn-i Sina Research and Practice Hospital of Medical Faculty of Ankara University, Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital of Ministry of Health and Söğütözü and Kavaklıdere Branch of Bayındır Hospital. Data for research in question were collected through data collection form having prepared by making use of literature by researcher. Data collection form consists of three sections. There are 6 questions with regard to nurses? descriptive characteristics in first section and 9 questions with regard to usage of VG site in second section. Also third section consists of 24 postulates concerning ventrogluteal site. Answers given by nurses to these postulates were assessed over 24 points. Opinions of 5 specialists were applied for validity of scope of data collection form. In assessing of data, percentage values, average measures, Kruskal Wallis Test, Mann Whitney U Test were used.As a result of this research, it has been determined that site used most frequently by nurses? is dorsogluteal site ( % 85.9) and ventrogluteal site (% 7.4) in IM injection practice. It has been understood that nurses? knowledge point averages are mid level (13.1±3.7) and that institution, gender, last state of education, year of service, department and difference between year of service in that department and knowledge point averages are not statistically meaningful (p>0.05). The difference is found statistically significant between the cases where nurses are aware of the fact that dorsogluteal site is not chosen for administering IM injection but ventrogluteal site should be the first site to be chosen, determining, pointing and using the ventrogluteal site by nurses and their point averages for information.
