Determination of knowledge levels of nurses about port catheter care

This descriptive research is done to determine the knowledge level of nurses on port catheter care. The research included the samples of 80 nurses which are gathered from 8 state or university hospital?s medical oncology or outpatient chemotheraphy clinics placed in municipality of Ankara, Turkey. The data in the research are gathered by means of using a data collecting form which is prepared by the researcher referring literature.The level of information concerning the use and maintenance of the port catheter, the nurses, were evaluated by calculating the mean scores. Evaluation of the obtained data points, average and percentage used in calculation. The mean overall score of the nurses for taking care of the port catheter and is over 100 points 23.42. Nurses' knowledge regarding the implementation of the flash port of heparin is the average score of X= 52.81. All other information on the mean scores were below 40 points. Relation between educational status of nurses and information about port catheter care is statistically significant (p=0,045). Due to the results of the research, to decrease the risk of complications and to increase the level of the patients? care; to give importance to continuity and currency of education of nurses and other stuff members taking care of patients having port catheters, with the help of a common protocol which is to be formed to provide same and safe care and to give written education papers and care charts to eliminate the difficulties resulting from patients are advised.
