The effect of nurses' resilience and meaning of life on their emotions, thoughts and behaviors related to COVID-19

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to reveal the effects of psychological resilience and life meanings on the emotions, thoughts and behaviors related to Covid-19 in nurses during the Covid-19 epidemic. Materials and Methods: The research is a cross-sectional type study. The population of the research is nurses working in public and private hospitals across Turkey, and the sample is 708 nurses who filled out the data collection tools between December 2021 and February 2022. Data collection tools; The Personal Information Form was the Multidimensional Covid-19 Scale, the Brief Resilience Scale, and the Meaning of Life Scale. Data analysis was done in SPSS 25 package program. Results: The mean score of the Nurses' Brief Psychological Resilience Scale was 18.90±4.58; Current Meaning of Life sub-dimension mean score was 27.61±5.59, and Meaning-Seeked Life sub-dimension mean score was 23.55±7.21. Multidimensional Covid-19 Scale mean score was 82.84±14.19; Emotions and Behaviors Regarding Covid-19 sub-dimension mean score is 30.85±7.36, Ideas Regarding Covid-19 sub-dimension mean score is 32.10±4.95, Measures Taken Regarding Covid-19 sub-dimension mean score was determined as 19.88±3.64. It was determined that the Brief Psychological Resilience Scale and the Current Meaning of Life sub-dimension were important in explaining the Multidimensional Covid-19 Scale. A one-point increase in the Brief Resilience Scale caused a -0.88-point decrease in the Multidimensional Covid-19 Scale, and a one-point increase in the Current Meaning of Life sub-dimension led to a 0.45-point increase in the Multidimensional Covid-19 Scale. Conclusion: In this study, it is possible to say that there is a negative relationship between the psychological resilience of nurses in the Covid-19 pandemic and their feelings and behaviors regarding Covid-19, and a positive relationship between the current life meaning and the measures taken against Covid-19. Studies that will contribute to nurses' psychological resilience and finding meaning in life can be supportive in being less affected by the negative effects of the pandemic.
