The effect of escape room on the implementation of patient care process in nursing students

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of escape room method on the implementation of patient care process in nursing students. Materials and Methods: The type of the study was carried out as a posttest single-group research design. The study was conducted with 60 students studying in the 2nd year nursing department at Manisa Celal Bayar University Faculty of Health Sciences between July-December 2023. The data were collected with the Individual Identification Form, Time, Clues and Score Chart and Satisfaction Questionnaire. The escape room was carried out with a total of in groups of 10 groups, and 6 people and each group participted in the activity only once. SPSS 21.0 package programme was used to evaluate the data. In the analysis of the data, number percentage distribution and descriptive statistics were used to describe demographic characteristics. Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis test and Spearman correlation analysis were used since the number of n in the groups was less than 30. Results: When the satisfaction scores of the students participating in the study were analysed, it was found that most of them (85.2%) were satisfied with the escape room method. The mean total procedure time of the groups was 20.85±5.15 and the mean total score was 56.80±2.50. When the total procedure time and total scores of the students were compared according to the groups, it was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). All of the groups (100%) used 1-3 prompts. There was a weak positive correlation between the totalprocessing time and total scores of the students. There was no correlation between the time used by the students during the application of the escape room method, total scores and satisfaction levels. Conclusion: All students completed the game within the allotted time. Most of them got high scores, used very few hints and most of them were satisfied with the game. The students reported that the escape room method motivated them, helped them learn, helped them develop their manual skills and problem solving skills, they enjoyed the application, they transferred their theoretical knowledge to practice, and they suggested that such applications should be included in nursing education.
