Abstract (EN)

In this study, the explanations of heterosexual men living in Turkey about vasectomy, which is a male contraceptive method and the discourses that are the source of these explanations were examined. Semi-structured in-depth interviews are made with 17 men between the age of 25-43. Interviews were recorded with a voice recorder with the knowledge of the interviews and then transcribed. Interview texts were analyzed with discourse analysis method. As a result of analysis, five interpretative repertoires are obtained: "Vasectomy as a last option", "vasectomy as an intervention to masculinity", "vasectomy as an obstacle to fatherhood", "vasectomy as a surgical operation", "vasectomy as a method contrary to traditions". As a result, it was seen that the participants explained and made sense of vasectomy through relationship with masculinity and fatherhood within the framework of gender norms rather than as a contraceptive method.
