Abstract (EN)
The Meriç River which draw up the national and political borders with the neighbors of Turkey in the European continent is one of the most important hydro-geomorphological units. This river's upper side and essential part of drainage zone is located out of our country and lower and east side of it is in our borders. Due to its location, it causes flood especially in Edirne and areas which are located downside of river bed and also causes significant enviromental problems. Main reason of the floods is geographical but recent increases of the floods are occured due to climatic changes and reduction of river bed capacity. In this study, Meriç River's which draws up the border and extends the border to foreign countries, relationship has been analyzed between hydrographic features and floods from the entrance on Kapıkule and Saros Gulf to its delta where it flows into the sea. Primarily, the main geographic factors which cause floods are examined, then relationship between hydrographic features and floods has been revealed. Especially, relationship between raining and flow has been analyzed, the changes during the time of the floods and the factors that effect the increase of floods in recent years have been explained. As finally, flood history has been examined in detail chronologically on the research field. As a result the increasing flood problem has been emphasized along with the reasons of the floods, will be/done precautions, successes/failures have been reviews, effect status on the today's conditions.
