Hierapolis, laodikea sarcophagus workshop relation

In this study, the relationship between two Girlandian sarcophagi belonging to Hierapolis and Laodicea will be evaluated… Because these sarcophagi are similar in terms of type. The continuation of both sarcophagi was not found either in Hierapolis or Laodicea or in Anatolia. Although these sarcophagi, which do not have continuation, are similar in type, there are serious differences between them. The most important differences in the sarcophagi are the description of workmanship and basic template. For example, the front long face of the Hierapolis sarcophagus has double girland decoration (Lev. I-Fig. 1) and the back long face has a frieze depiction in the Medallion sarcophagi (Lev. I-Fig. 2). Double girland decorations are depicted on the front and back long faces of the sarcophagus of Laodicea; but in the girland cavities, the depiction of the female-male bust on the front long face (Lev. II-Fig. 4) and the mask depictions in the girland cavities on the back long face (Lev. II-Fig. 5) are detailed… There are similar and different aspects of the sarcophagi that will be evaluated in the study, and the question of how the workshop relations are aroused.When the Hierapolis and Laodikei sarcophagi were examined carefully, it was observed that the basic patterns were made in the opposite direction to the Anatolian Girland tradition. For example, the Anatolian sarcophagus tradition is defined by three girland ornaments. The sarcophagi in Hierapolis and Laodicea were shaped by double girland ornaments. Therefore, it will be tried to determine in which workshop these sarcophagi were prepared in line with the workshop and whether they were produced as a result of a local tradition or if the sarcophagi were shaped in this way… In addition, the absence of other examples of the sarcophagus shows that they are original work. Therefore, it is understood that the sarcophagi of Hierapolis and Laodicea have a privileged place among the sarcophagi of Girland.
