IV ABSTRACT The effect of story mapping method over the reading comprehension skill of primary education fourth grade students was investigated in this work. To confirm this objective, the answers of 15 sub problems related to levels of reading comprehension skill of primary education fourth grade students were searched. This research was performed over 44 students ( half of them in experimental group and the other half in control group) by using end-test measuring design. Fourth grade students of Afşin Bey Primary School, Yenimahalle, Ankara were selected for this study during the 2001-2002 educational year. Previously selected fourteen stories were studied with the students in experimental group by using story mapping method for seven weeks. On the other hand, the same stories were studied in control group at the same time period by using traditional method. At the end of study, a test consisted of 14 questions were applied both groups for answering 15 sub problems to figure out the effect of story mapping method over the reading comprehension skill of primary education fourth grade students. By using data obtained from this test, whether or not significant differences of the reading comprehension skills between experimental and control groups were analyzed with t-test in SPSS. These findings were obtained at the end of story: 1. Story mapping method was found more effective than the traditional method over the level of reading comprehension skill and correctly finding story elements skill of the primary education fourth grade students. 2. The story mapping method was not very efficent to find the main idea of a story compared to other story elements.
