Abstract (EN)

VI SUMMARY This study was conducted by the purpose of determining the anxiety level of mothers who have hospitalized infant owing to hyperbilirubinemia, factors influenced the anxiety level and role of giving information on reducing the anxiety as semi experimental. The data were collected by Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and by the questionnaire from 80 mothers as 40 for control group and 40 for experimental group who applied to neonatal care unit in the dates between 6th May 2001 and 19th March 2002 at Yakutiye Research Hospital, Atatürk University. In the evaluation of the data percentage, chi-square test, t test, kruskal wall is variance analysis, mann whitney- u test were used. In the beginning of the study it has been determined that the difference between the averages of mothers' state anxiety and trait anxiety score in both groups was significant (pO.001). On the other hand, the difference in the averages of state and trait anxiety score between experimetal group and control group was not significant (p>0.05). It was found that mothers in both groups were affected by invaziv procedures applied to newborn infant and by the problems related to companianship in the hospital. It was also determined that the difference between the averages of state anxiety posttest score in experimental and control group (p<0.001) and averages of the state anxiety pretest-posttest score in experimental group was significant (p<0.001). The results of the study indicated that the required support should be provided to mothers whose children hospitalized and suitable environment according to the needs of mothers in postpartum period should also be provided in the clinic where the study was conducted.
