The effect of the use of music and natural landscape images during hysterosalpingography (HSG) on women's pain level, anxiety and analgesic use

Abstract (EN)

The study was conducted with a randomized controlled pretest-posttest control group trial model method to evaluate the effectiveness of music and natural landscape pictures to reduce pain and anxiety and analgesic use of women undergoing HSG. The study was conducted between December 2022 and July 2023 in the Radiology unit of Dicle University Hospital. In the study, volunteer participants were divided into three groups by simple randomization method. The study was completed with a total of 99 volunteer women (control group: 33, music group: 33, natural landscape pictures video group: 33). Data were collected using a socio-demographic data questionnaire, state-trait anxiety inventory, visual analog scale (VAS) and anesthesia follow-up form. Pre-test and post-test with data collection tools were applied to the participant women for data collection. The women in the control group were not intervened after the pre-test and the post-test was applied after the HSG procedure with data collection tools. Data collection tools were applied to the women in the music group for the pretest, and after the women were taken to the HSG procedure, headphones were put on and music was turned on. The post-test was administered to the women 15 minutes after the procedure. After 24 hours, the women were contacted and questioned whether they used anelgesic or not. Data collection tools were applied to the women in the natural landscape pictures video group for the pretest, and after the women were taken to the HSG procedure, the video with natural landscape pictures was opened to the women with an ipad. The post-test was applied to the women 15 minutes after the procedure. After 24 hours, the women were contacted and questioned whether they used anelgesic or not. The data were analyzed by transferring to SPSS 21 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) package program. When the pre-test scores were analyzed in terms of groups; the pre-test scores did not show statistically significant difference according to the groups (p>0.05). It was observed that homogeneity was achieved at the beginning. After the intervention, the mean post-test state score was 47.39±6.80 in the control group, 27.24±5.33 in the music group and 29.72±4.08 in the natural landscape pictures video group, and the mean VAS score was 6.88±2.13 in the control group, 2.27±1.03 in the music group and 1.82±0.84 in the natural landscape pictures video group. It was found that 48.5% of the women in the music and natural landscape pictures video groups did not use analgesics, while 48.5% of the control group used analgesics. As a result of our study, it was determined that music and natural landscape pictures were an effective method to reduce women's pain, anxiety and analgesic use during HSG.
