The effect of burnout level on job satisfaction in service sector; a research of the shopping center employees

The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of burnout levels of employees that work in mall shops which exist in our lives as a socialization area rather than meeting our needs nowadays. A multidimensional suructure of burnout syndrome that couses job dissatisfaction and can lead to negative consequences; face to face working style and less work in organized retail area which is the main business of the sales in service sector are play an important role in the selection of the research. A total of 335 employees were surveyed by including eight shopping centers in the South Marmara region (Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Bursa, Bandırma, Biga). A 335 employees who participated in the survey were selected according to the simple random sampling method and questionnaires were distributed regardless of brand or service area. The personal information for demographic factors; the single question which "How satisfied are you with your work and workplace in general?" for determine the level of job satisfaction and the Maslach Burnout Inventory scale for determine the burnout level are used in this research. The survey data were analyzed statistically using SPSS software program. In addition, employees were asked questions to understand the working conditions of shopping mall employees and asked to answer on a 5-point Likert Scale. Correlation and simple lineer regression test analysis were used to test the hypothesis in line with to answer given in the questionnaire. The relationship between work related stress questions and job satisfaction levels was tried to be analyzed in order to understand the working conditions of employees. Chi-square test was used for these analysis. A statistically significant relationship was determined between the tension, comfort level, job security and lack of work status and job satisfaction levels of the working environment as a result of the chi-square test. In addition, Mann Whitney U test used for the difference between the location of shopping malls in city centers or district in terms of burnout syndrome and job satisfaction and the relationship between emotional syndrome, demographic charecteristics and working conditions of employees. The result of analysis shows that there is a statistically significant difference between the location and the burnout level in city centers and districts, however it was determined that there was no significant difference in terms of job satisfaction. As a result of the reliability and factor analysis, it was decided that the application of the burnout scale in two dimensions would be more suitable for this research area. In this research which investigate the extent of affecting job satisfaction within the scope of emotional exhaustion and personal failure dimensions. The Correlation analysis showed that there is a weak relationship between burnout and job satisfaction. However, when the situation is examined in the context of sub dimensions, negative relationship between emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction, a weak and positive relationship between personal achievement sub dimension and job satisfaction.
