VI ABSTRACT MASTER THESIS THE GEOGRAPHY OF HINIS TOWN Supervisor: AssocProf. Kenan ARINÇ 2001, Page: 180 Jury: AssocProf. Kenan ARINÇ Hınıs locates in the part of upper Murat- Van in the region of east Anatolia. İt is a town centre being connected with Erzurum city. This settlement which exists at some distances about 150km from Erzurum remains in the southern of the city. The town appeaers in Hims depression in the directin between North-west and South-east. The field in which the settlemen is reminds us of a plateau tahat has been split deeply by the rivers. The terrestrial climate seems in Hims.The annusl average temperature is 6.1 °C. On the other hand the precipitatin reports of the settlemen are discriminared fron the other environs of the region.The annul precipitatin about 582 mm.occurs on average. Aproximately 23960 people live there according to results of 1997 General Census of establishment in Hims.However the real population of the town reflects lees accountThe settlement has a young and dynamic population. Nowadays the endeavour of project of population has been made in the town. Is estimated that the settkemen was faunded by the groups which belonged Hurri- Mitanni culture in 1400 BC. The settlement that had been under the sovereingty of many cultures in the history was conguered by the Battle of Malazgirt. The fisrt position in which the settlement has located is the walley of Hims River. Hims where some functional specialities have developed is a residential town. The agricultural economy is dominant in Hims. Furthermore, the agricultural activities haven't rescuet themselves from the primitive methods. The cattle breeding is much more important than the cultivating activities in the town. Unfortunately not only there haven't been any modern industrial foundations but also the trousim business hasn't developed so far although Hims has an essential potential in this sector.
