The reflection of biopic genre in Hollywood on the Turkish cinema

Abstract (EN)

Concept of genre has been subsisting in cinema art for a long time like the other fields of art. Film genres which was seen first example in the earlier stages of cinema has especially developed and varied with the effect of Hollywood. In early times, film genres was categorized under western, comedy, melodrama, musical and later film genres had a lot of subgenres with the variation of genre fact. One of the important fact which provides variation to concept of genre is producing movies like a factory with Hollywood studio system and developing the successful movies with similar formulas. Hollywood industry has evoked its effect on the other countries’ cinema and many countries are inspired from the movies which is created with Hollywood’s formulas. Many subgenre movies show up with the effect of Hollywood. Biopic is one of the subgenre which show up with this effect. Biopic is accepted as subgenre which shows characteristics of main genres like melodrama, epic and drama. It is possible to encounter biopic genre from the earlier stages of Hollywood. The movies produced in biopic genre increases in the last years of in Turkey cinema although it doesn’t have rich past as American cinema. With this research, last years of four Turkish and Hollywood biopic movies are examined under the title of narrative structure, character-conflict, iconography and popularitycommercial. Before these analyses, concept of genre, genre types, and biopic genre are searched with the main lines. Also,the concept of Hollywood industry, studio system and star system are examined.In the consequences of these processes, the questions of how Hollywood biopic genre affects cinema of Turkey, how and in which ways the chosen Turkish movies are afected and how these two movies uses similar formulas are examined.
