IV ABSTRACT Masters Thesis HYDROGEOLOGY INVESTIGATION OF HORATA (MALATYA) SPRING WATERS Osman GÜNAYDIN Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Geological Engineering 2001, Page: 54 In this study, titled as "Hydrogeology Investigation of Horata (Malatya) Spring Waters", water sarnies have been studied with respect to their physico-chemical and hydrogeology characteristics. According to meteorological data the mean precipitation and temperature for the region over 19 years are 386.7 mm and 13.6 °C, respectively. The study area hosts a variety of lithologies with varying ages from Paleozoic to Cenozoic. These include, progressing upward, Malatya Metamorphics of Permo- Carboniferous age, Gündüzbey Formation of late Cretaceous age, Yeşilyurt Formation of late Eocen age and debris and alluvial deposits of Quaternary age. Groundwater-bearing formations in the area are the Malatya Metamorphics, Gündüzbey and Yeşilyurt Formations.V Origin of the anions and cations contained by the water samples is explained based on the data acquired from the chemical analyses. A number of diagrams including Schoeller, Piper, Terrary, Stiff, Column, Drinkability, USA Salinity, Wilcox, Calcium balance and Carbonate balance by employing these data. Ca+2,Mg+2, and HCO3" are the principle ions contained by the waters analyzed. Variations in water flow (discharge) of the spring waters were measured during the period between 20.06.2000 and 02.10.2000. According to these mesurements, highest discharge was 1528 lt/sec at 15 may 2000, and lowest reading was 22 lt/sec at 25 September 2000. Water discharge of the Horata spring was 1.08 xlO6 cubic meters during the period between 20 June 1999 and 15 September 1999. Wereas, this amount was 4.01 x 106 cubic meters during the period between 14 May 2000 and 25 September 2000. KEY WORDS: Hydrogeology, Horata Spring, Malatya Metamorphics, Discharge spring. Calcium, Carbonate
