Structure, theme, narration in Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpinar's novels up until the 1919

In this dissertation, Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar?s novels written during 1889-1919 are analysed. In the dissertation, Gürpınar?s novels up until the year 1919 ara analysed. The study consists of two main parts: The first part, The Structural Analysis of Gürpınar?s Sixteen Novels; and the second part, Common Structures, Theme, Language and Narration among the Sixteen Novels.The novels of Gürpınar (1864-1944) who started writing during the late Tanzîmat (Re-organization) Period and continued writing until his death, depict the social realities of his era. Gürpınar?s novels display a documentary character, and reflect the cultural changes in İstanbul after the Tanzîmat period. Gürpınar?s novels which are in a way social history of his period, are written with quite an ideosyncratic style, and they have been considered classical works since then.It should be noted that the dissertation is not a biographical work, and therefore the details of the author?s life is not covered in the study. In the Introduction of the dissertation, the following are mentioned: The development of the Turkish novel until Gürpınar; Gürpınar?s literary position vis-a-vis his contemporaries and his particular `literary realism?.In the dissertation, it has not been possible due to technical reasons, to analyse all of the 41 novels of Gürpınar, and the dissertation is confined to the author?s novels written until the year 1919, when in fact the author started to have a certain shift in his literary outlook. In the first part of dissertation, which is the main part, the first 16 novels of Gürpınar are analysed with a structuralist aproach under the titles of ?About The Dissertation?, ?Introduction to the Work?, ?Summary?, ?Structure?, ?Theme?, ?Language and Narration?, ?Comprehension and Interpretation?.In the ?Structure? section of the first part, literary elements such as, time, place, and characters are analysed as to how they contribute to the plot; as a result of the structuralist analysis, it is concluded that, Gürpınar followed his literary master Ahmed Midhat, and that Gürpınar never gave up the narration techniques of the classical novel.In the second part, the common and overarching structures, themes and narrative qualities of the 16 novels are exposed with a panoramic view, and some general conclusions are reached. In this part of the dissertation, the issues of mischievous westernisation, superstitions among the people, and the women?s issues are depicted in the context of the tension between tradition and modernity.In the conclusion of the dissertation, the main arguments are paraphrased, and it is concluded that Gürpınar, without following his milleau?s literary conventions reached in his novels an original synthesis between clasical Turkish literary legacy and western novel. While doing so, Gürpınar pursued the goal of saving his country?s people from backwardness and lifting them up to high civilization and sublime philosophy.Key Words: Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, novel, structure, theme, narration
