The effect of rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) based implementations on reading and comprehension levels of secondary school students

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) based implementations on the reading and comprehension levels of secondary school students. The main problem of the research: "Do the Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) based implementations have an effect on the reading and comprehension levels of secondary school students?" has been determined. In the study one of the quantitative research methods, a quasi-experimental design with unequal pretest posttest and control group was used. The sample of the study consists of 7th grade students of a state secondary school continuing education in the center of Kütahya in the 2021-2022 academic year. After the pre-test implementation; block reading, shadowing, tachistoscope, eye exercises, square visual field and focusing activities were carried out with the experimental group for 2 hours in a week, and the experimental group students were prepared Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) implementation with swiftread. At the end of the implementation with the experimental group, a statistically significant increase is observed in the number of words read per minute and in the reading comprehension levels of the students in the post-test performed on the computer screen with swiftread, an RSVP-based application (plugin). While the experimental group students read an average of 116.84 words per minute in the pre-test, they read an average of 315.52 words per minute in the application performed with swiftread. An increase was observed in the comprehension test performed with swiftread of the experimental group students compared to the pre-test data. While the experimental group students scored 9.27 in the pre-test, this value was measured as 11.21 in the post-test. Keywords: RSVP, Fast Reading, Reading Comprehension, Secondary School, Swiftread
