Mushkil al-Qur'an in Ibn Atiyya's tafsir work called al-Muharrar al-Wajiz

In this study, Ibn Atiyya al-Andalusi's approach to the verses that are considered to be mushkil in his work al-Muharrar al-wajīz fi tafsīr al-Kitāb al-Azīz is discussed. Ibn Atiyya's methodological stance and his interpretations of the seemingly contradictory verses in the Qur'an are analyzed. In the first part of the study, Ibn Atiyya's life, scholarly personality and works were introduced and the effects of the political and intellectual environment of his time on his tafsīr were evaluated. Subsequently, the nature, definition, historical development of the science of mushkil al-Qur'ān, which aims to reveal that the divine kalām is free from all kinds of contradictions, and the causes and solutions of the mushkil seen in the verses are given. In the second part, the mushkil issues in the verses about divinity and prophethood; in the third part, by identifying the mushkil issues in the verses that are related to creation, the hereafter and various issues, Ibn Atiyya's interpretations of these verses are analyzed. The different opinions in the classical sources on the subjects are also included, drawing attention to the different possible meanings of the verses. In conclusion, this study, which examines Ibn Atiyya's approach and analysis of issues in the context of the science of mushkil al-Qur'ān, aims to make a qualified and original contribution to the existing literature on this field.
