The hadith methodology of Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (The example of Ravâi̇u't-tafsîr)

The thesis examines the hadith methodology of Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali with a particular focus on his work named Ravâiu't-Tafsîr. It consists of an introduction, three main chapters, and a conclusion. The introductory section provides information on the purpose, importance, subject, and methodology of this study. The first chapter gives a brief outline of the Mamluk State and discusses the scholarly atmosphere of the period in which Ibn Rajab lived. The Islamic education centers, the ideas, and works of the scholars who grew up in these centers, and their contributions to Islamic sciences such as tafsir, hadith, and fiqh are investigated. The ancestry, birth, and family of Ibn Rajab are described and brief information is given about the teachers who contributed to the formation of his scientific personality and the students raised by him. This chapter also introduces the works reflecting the author's broad scientific knowledge. The second chapter of the study starts with specific information on the name of the tafsîr under consideration, its copyright, features, and sources. The status of hadith narrators is studied in terms of "adâlah" (righteousness) and zabt (memory power), and the trustworthiness and weaknesses of the narrators in the hadith scholars view are highlighted in order to uncover Ibn Rajab's view on the isnad and text system (reference, resource, and status). In the third chapter of this thesis, the details of the method followed by Ibn Rajab in resolving the conflict between the narration texts are pointed out. The hadith methodology of Ibn Rajab is tried to be ascertained by examining the way he evaluates some hadiths. Finally, Ibn Rajab's salafi, creed, jurisprudence, and mystical thoughts are given, and their reflections in his Ravâiu't-Tafsîr are emphasized.
