Research on internal migration by applying nonlinear models: The case of Erzurum-Bursa provinces

Migration is a quite complex phenomenon associated with many components and therefore, many scientific fields have drawn attention to the corresponding phenomenon. Internal migration is a migration occurred in the borders of a country. Migration in Turkey generally tends to be directed towards larger and more developed cities. However, there exists a density on the direction of certain cities such as migration from Erzurum to Bursa cities. Nowadays, the migration flow between Erzurum and Bursa cities proceeds since 1980's which necessitates to be examined. This work aims to analyze migration flows between Erzurum and Bursa Provinces using compartment models for the period of 1980-2015. This study performs compartment models to examine the changes of migration flows with respect to time, unemployment rate, and gross domestic product. Estimation results reveal that there exists a significant change on migration from Erzurum to Bursa with respect to time and unemployment rate, but a more static journey is determined from Bursa to Erzurum.
