Reducing energy consumption in drinking water supply systems and energy optimization with artificial bee colony algorithm

Abstract (EN)

In addition to global warming, seasonal changes and changes in the precipitation regime, unconscious consumption has led to a serious decrease in drinking water resources in recent years. In drinking water supply systems, the most important element in supplying drinking water from its source and delivering it to the end user is energy. In this thesis, four main issues are addressed to reduce energy consumption in drinking water supply systems: (i) installation of higher efficiency pump motors and drives, (ii) determination of the effect of collecting tank level on the energy consumption of lift pumps in drinking water distribution systems, (iii) energy efficiency optimization using Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm, and (iv) the technical and economic feasibility of using solar photovoltaic energy to reduce the net power drawn from the grid by submersible pumps in urban water supply systems. Kayseri Germiraltı drinking water catchment area was chosen as the research area. The submersible pumps in the catchment area were operated by the operators over SCADA between 01.03.2019-29.02.2020, and by using the Artificial Bee Colony algorithm between 01.03.2020-28.02.2021. In order to use renewable energy to reduce the net power drawn from the grid with submersible pumps, two different scenarios, "hybrid powered water pumping system" and "grid connected PV system", were modeled and simulated using PVsyst v7.02 software. In addition, a model experimental setup was set up in an independent laboratory in Kayseri to examine the effect of the collecting tank level on the energy consumption of the pumps in the drinking water distribution systems. It has been determined that significant energy savings will occur with the submersible pump revisions to be made in all boreholes used in the catchment area. The increase in the collection tank level reduced the specific energy and specific cost. Significant gains in energy efficiency have been achieved when the pumps are operated with the artificial bee colony algorithm method. It has been determined that it is economically competitive to meet the energy needs of submersible pumps in urban water supply systems with solar PV energy.
