Abstract (EN)
Using of internal combustion engines in transportation sector increases regularly. Increase in the number of internal combustion engines makes it necessary to develop the engine performance and power characteristics. However, producing more powerful engines depends on the combustion efficiencies. The mechanical energy on the engine output shaft is the one third of the heat energy generated in the cylinder. Remaining portion is dissipated through the exhaust end engine cooling fluid. Although the energy dissipated the cooling system, these systems are one of the most important systems keeping the temperature of the engine parts in a desired band and make the life of these parts longer. The engine cooling systems in the commercial vehicles have not developed as the other control systems despite the technological improvements. Additionally, researchers in the automotive industry and the universities have focused on the power production and the combustion. Therefore, the thermal management of internal combustion engines, which has the same importance, does not taken into consideration sufficiently. However, optimum management of heat transfer system in the engines has an important effect on many parameters such as the engine performance, lubrication quality, exhaust emissions and fuel efficiency. It is necessary to define the engine cooling fluid temperature and flow rate profiles, and to follow them sensitively by a controller system to be designed. In this thesis study prepared for this purpose, it is aimed to design and to produce a thermal management system for internal combustion engines in order to ensure optimal distribution of the heat transfer. According to the observations in the studies to be carried out in the thesis, the control of the actuators will be done and the measuring of all the parameters about the engine cooling system will be used in the control applications. Additionally, experiments will be carried out with different control algorithms according the studies.
