Abstract (EN)

This study, describes the importance and mission of factory settlements in the modernization movement from the spatial, social and ideological aspects of Karabük Iron and Steel Factory workers? settlement. In the study, the concept of modernism is discussed in the context of ideology and understanding of statecraft. Factory settlements which are the spatial reflection of comprehension of statecraft and ideology of the Republican era, are examined with the examples in the world and in Turkey. The case of study refer to the spatial, social and cultural context of the practices of everyday life of Karabük Iron and Steel Factory settlements; and the current status of the settlement is considered with a critical approach. The importance of the settlement is removed by the help of the research of newspapers which are published in that period, magazines, books, documents and old photographs. The meaning and mission of factories and factory settlements which are given with the ideology of the period in the process of building a modern nation, is estimated by the help of Karabük; and the formation of current housing tissue of the city is questioned in this context.Key Words : Workers? settlements, modernism, ideology, Karabük, Karabük Iron Steel Factory workers? settlement
