Özet (EN)

This study examines the manner in which gender roles are constructed in the rites of passage of Assyrians residing in Idil. The social structures of the Assyrian people are predominantly shaped by rituals and norms of daily life. The study analyzes how gender roles are determined and transmitted in the context of birth, marriage, and death rituals. The study's findings indicate that rites of passage serve to reinforce gender norms by distinctly delineating male and female roles. In birth rituals, the sanctification of motherhood is paramount, and women are evaluated based on their fertility. Marriage rituals have been observed to effect changes in the position of women within the family structure, while concomitantly strengthening the economic and social status of men. In the context of death rituals, it has been observed that the role of women is predominantly emotional and supportive, while men are primarily engaged in the organizational aspects of funeral ceremonies. The study explores the role of rituals in preserving social structure and the influence of gender on ritual practices. In light of the pivotal function of rituals in the transmission of social norms within the Assyrian community, this study elucidates the manner in which these rituals influence and metamorphose gender roles.
