İnvestigating the properties of E. coli isolated from children with urinary tract infection

Abstract (EN)

E. coli is the most common microorganism isolated from urinary tract infections and has virulence factors that facilitate their colonization and persistence in the urinary epithelium. In this study, Gazi Üniversity Hospital Microbiology Laboratory proveded 50 pieces E.coli strains, haemagglutination,haemolysin and biofilm formation has been investigated and the importance of creating a role and sensitivity result and to highlight the relationship between virulance factors and antibiotic suscebtibilty were investigated evtended spectrum beta lactamase(ESBL) presence. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) of Levofloxacin, Meropenem, Ciprofloxacin and Gentamycin were determined according to the guidelines of Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). ESBL phenotyping confirmation test was applicated according to the guidelines of CLSI and Cephotaxim, Cephotaxim/Clavulanic acid, Ceftazidime and Ceftazidime/Clavulanic acid were used. Biofilm formation was determined by a modified microtitre plate test and measured using an ELISA optical reader. Mannose resistant hemagglutination and hemolysine production were also determined. The correlation of susceptibility values and the virulence factors was investigated. As a result, 7 strains were resistant to Ciprofloxacin and 5 strains were resistant to Gentamycin. Fifteen strains were determined as ESBL producing and among these strains 10 strains were biofilm forming and 2 were mannose resistance hemagglutination positive. Beta hemolysin production was observed in only 1 strain that was not ESBL producing and mannose resistant hemagglutination of this strain was positive. As a result, statistically significant difference was determined between biofilm formation and GSBL production.
