The effect of caring behaviors training given by two different teaching methods on care focused nurse patient interactions and ethical attitudes of nursing students

Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Zehra GÖÇMEN BAYKARA This study was carried out in a mixed design, a randomized pre-test post-test comparative study in order to determine the effects of care behavior education given by distance education in two different ways on nursing students' care-oriented nurse-patient interactions and ethical attitudes, and as qualitative study to explore the views of students. Research; it was conducted with 95 third-year students (case group=47; video group=48) in the spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year at Gazi University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing. In the care behavior education, which is given to students through distance education and based on the Theory of Human Care, the theoretical education was completed in two sessions and the practical training was completed in four sessions. In the practical sessions, case analysis method was used in one group and video-assisted teaching method was used in the other group. Data in the research; it was obtained by using the 'Descriptive Characteristics Form', the Caring Nurse Patient Interaction Scale (CNPIS)', the 'Scale for Attitudes of Ethical Principles (SAEP)' and the 'Student Opinion Form on Care Behaviors Education'. In the evaluation of quantitative data, t test, Mann Whitney U test, Wilcoxon paired two sample test and Linear Regression Analysis were used; the significance level was accepted as p<0.05 in statistical tests. Document analysis method was used in the evaluation of qualitative data. Necessary permissions were obtained before starting the research. It was determined that there was a statistically significant increase in the intragroup scale scores of the students after the care behavior training (p<0.05). However, no statistically significant difference was found in the scale scores between the groups (p>0.05). It was determined that there was a statistically significant, positive and generally moderate relationship between the care-oriented nurse-patient interactions and ethical attitudes of the students. In addition, the students who participated in the research reported that they were satisfied with the care behavior education and that the education improved their perceptions of care and their ethical attitudes. In line with the results of the research, it is recommended that both case analysis and video-assisted teaching methods be used in caring behavior education and in gaining ethical attitudes in care, and this study should be done with larger groups on different subjects.
