3DETERMINATION OF THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS FOR THEPRODUCTION OF FURFURAL FROM SUGAR BEET PULP WITH USINGTWO STEP REACTIONS AND LIQUID EXTRACTION METHOD(M.Sc. Thesis)Gülşah AYTEKİNGAZİ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSeptember 2006ABSTRACTIn this study, the influences of temperature, sulphuric acid concentrationand liquid/solid ratio on the production of furfural from sugar beet pulpwere investigated. The optimum liquid/solid ratio was found as 16 (mLacid/g pulp). In the remaining parts of the experiments this ratio was used. The intervals of temperature (155-205 ºC) and sulphuric acid concentration(% 2-8) were chosen by Box-Wilson experimental design method.Acidic hydrolysis of sugar beet pulp was carried at various concentrations.Furfural was extracted by o-nitrotoluene.The data taken from the experiments were put in Design Expert 7.02computer program and model equation was formed. Calculated values fromthe model fit well with experimental values. The maximum furfural production rate was found as 0.1077 (mgfurfural/mg xylose-hour). Optimum conditions for the maximum furfuralproduction rate was found at 157,49 ºC temperature and % 5,50 acidconcentration.4Furfural production was done at the optimum conditions. The mean of thefurfural production rates of the optimum conditions was found as 0,1101 (mgfurfural/mg xylose-hour). It fit with the result of the optimum furfuralproduction rate (0,1077 (mg furfural/mg xylose-hour)) which was found byDesign Expert 7.02 computer program.Science Code : 912.1.023Key Words : Sugar beet pulp, Furfural, o-nitrotoluene, Box-WilsonPage Number : 85Adviser : Yrd.
