The phenomenon of loneliness in Ikinci Yeni

The aim of this study is to examine the theme of loneliness, which is prominent in the Ikinci Yeni poetry, in the context of existential psychotherapy theory. The Ikinci Yeni poetry movement, which emerged in the 1950s, is a poetry that emphasises the individual's inner world, existential concerns and the experience of loneliness. In this context, especially in the poems of Turgut Uyar, Edip Cansever and Cemal Süreya, loneliness is addressed together with the individual's search for meaning, alienation and inner conflicts. The main aim of the thesis is to reveal the extent to which the phenomenon of loneliness in the Ikinci Yeni coincides with the principles of existential psychotherapy in the light of Irvin D. Yalom's ideas. In the study, an eclectic method consisting of existentialism and existential psychotherapy theory was used and supported by Rollo May's views. While forming the theoretical framework of the thesis, the basic concepts of existential psychotherapy such as loneliness, death, freedom and meaninglessness were explained and the poems were analysed through these concepts. In the applied section, the poems of Turgut Uyar, Edip Cansever and Cemal Süreya were analysed with an existentialist approach through the theme of loneliness. It has been concluded that the Ikinci Yeni poets treat the theme of loneliness as a fundamental moment of rupture in the human relationship with existence, beyond an individual emotional state. The imagery, linguistic structures and stylistic preferences in the poems expand the poetic expression possibilities of existential loneliness. This thesis shows that loneliness in the poetry of the Ikinci Yeni poetry is not only a literary theme but also points to a philosophical ground and establishes a meaningful connection with the theory of existential psychotherapy.
