Effects of climate change on airports: The case of Batman Airport

Abstract (EN)

The primary aim of this study is to analyze impacts of climate change on airports and to examine these impacts in detail with a specific focus on Batman Airport. The study comprehensively examines the effects of climate change on infrastructure, operational, and facility-related cost components, and proposes cost-reduction and adaptation strategies to mitigate these impacts. In this context, the study provides a detailed analysis of the effects of climate change on airport infrastructure, energy consumption, maintenance and repair requirements, weather-related operational challenges, and facility management. Using a qualitative research methodology, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with experts at Batman Airport and supplemented with global and region-specific climate projections. These data were utilized to identify the causes of cost changes in airport operations and their potential long-term effects. In addition to analyzing the direct impacts of climate change on airport operations, the study also explores indirect effects. The findings reveal that rising temperatures and extreme weather events associated with changing climate conditions can lead to significant cost increases for regional airports. The study underscores the necessity of developing sustainable management strategies to prevent or minimize these impacts. In this regard, various policy recommendations are proposed to ensure the environmental, operational, and economic sustainability of airports. Furthermore, the findings obtained through the case of Batman Airport serve as a guide for other regional airports, offering insights into measures and strategies to be implemented against climate change.
