Climate and landforms relationship: A climatic geomorphology approach

Abstract (EN)

The concept of climatic geomorphology was first used by de Martonne in 1913. It has been adopted in many countries since the beginning of the 20th century and numerous studies on the subject have been made by many authors. The approach gained its highest momentum between 1950-1980. Although it has lost its former momentum, it has continued its existence by preserving its current status. There have been some critics of the approach that regards the climate controlling external factors and processes as the main factor in the formation of landforms, and some authors have seen the climate in the secondary. Prof. Dr. Oğuz EROL introduced the climatic geomorphology approach to the Turkish literature in 1992. Although the approach met late with the academy community, it did not receive the required attention. As a matter of fact, there is no tangible serious work after Erol. This approach has been mentioned superficially in geomorphology textbooks and in studies dealing with morphogenetic zones, but little emphasis is placed on it. In this study, it is aimed to re-introduce the climatic geomorphology to the literature and to gain a new momentum by presenting it to both geomorphologists and those who are interested in the subject. This research is a qualitative, holistic single case study and document analysis method was used. Although the study is a first in the academy community, it has also been a pioneer in future studies.
