Social media as the panopticon eye of power: Facebook-Cambridge Analytica

Surveillance is one of the most frequently used tools of control and disciplinary by power. The study aims to deal with the changes in the historical process of surveillance. The panopticon, first introduced by Jeremy Bentham, is the most well-known model and concept of surveillance. In this study, the change from classical panopticon to digital panopticon is discussed. In the first part of the study which consists of three parts, the definition and nature of power, the function and types of power. The definition of surveillance and the development and change of the concept of panopticon in the historical process, the various types and concepts of surveillance derived from classical panopticon have been the subject of the first chapter. The definition and function of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram and Periscope and the phenomenon of social media were explained. The third part includes the transformation of social media practices as surveillance tools. The Facebook - Cambridge Analytica data scandal revealed the intended use of the data today. Surveillance is now taking place in an abstract space like the digital world, rather than concrete spaces such as factory, hospital, school, military. virtual surveillance is provided by individuals' digital movements and social media usage practices, independent of the concrete space. consumption habits and political behavior of individuals are influenced by illegal user data. The relationship between social media, surveillance and politics is discussed with the 'case study' method.
