Age discrimination and social perception in films with advanced adults: (Examples of intern and Ben Daniel Blake)

This study aims to address the relationship between age discrimination and social perception towards advanced adults in movies. Movies are one of the important mass media tools. One of the most important functions of mass media is to disseminate ideas. Films have been preferred because they make the mentality of the societies known. The data collected in this research, which was carried out within the framework of the qualitative research method, were analyzed within the framework of Cristian Metz's Semiotics theory. In the selection of the sample, purposive sampling not based on probability was used. In this context, the films Intern (2015) directed by Nancy Meyers and Ben Daniel Blake (2016) directed by Ken Loach were evaluated and interpreted in terms of age discrimination and social perception. In addition, for the purpose of examining at the local level, the Turkish-made film Beyaz Melek, directed and scripted by Mahsun Kırmızıgül, has been briefly examined and is included in the appendices. In the first part, the conceptual and theoretical background is given; In the second part, explanations about the method and analysis. Before these films were decided, some films were examined and two films were selected, which were thought to be the best examples of intelligibility of the subject. In addition, other sources (articles, theses and serials, etc.) used during the thesis process were used where necessary and used in this study. The use of indicators was monitored throughout the analysis. In particular, it was tried to reach the indicators about age discrimination and social perception, and the relationship between age discrimination and social perception was discussed with detailed visuals.
