Validity and reliability study of the general short form of the communicative participation item bank (CPIB) for als patients in Turkey

Validity and Reliability study of "The General Short Form of the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB)" for ALS patients in Turkey This form is the Turkish translation of "The General Short Form of the Communicative Participation Item Bank", that was developed by Yorkston et al. to evaluate the communication of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, head and neck cancer, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease. The aim of this study is to examine the validity and reliability of "The General Short Form of the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB)" for ALS patients in Turkey. Sampling group of the study consisted of 60 ALS patients who were members of the ALS-MNH association from Izmir and Istanbul between June-November 2016. In the research, ALS Introductory Features Question Form and The General Short Form of the Communicative Participation Item Bank" was used. Forward and backward translation procedure and pretest were used for translation equivalency and linguistic adaptation. Test-retest reliability coefficient and total scale Cronbach's Alpha coefficient were calculated as 0.99 and 0.99, respectively. The item-total correlation coefficients of the scale ranged from 0.92-0.93. The scale was examined by 11 experts to verify it is content validity. According to expert's suggestion modifications was implemented. Content validity index was calculated with Kendall analysis as W=0.127; p=0.018. That is, the scores of the experts are not statistically different, and it is seen that the experts are in consensus. According to these results, no item was removed from the scale. As a result it is concluded that, "The General Short Form of the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB)" was a sufficiently valid and reliable instrument for ALS patients in Turkey. It may be suggested that the scale is used for ALS patients. Further study on validity and reliability for Parkinson, MS, head and neck cancer patients is also recommended.
