A SAMPLE STUDY FOR THE EVALUATION OF THE SOCIAL,INTELLECTUAL AND ECONOMICAL ASPECTS OF THE GRIDPLANNING IN CITIES OF EARLY AGE(M.Sc.Thesis)Şibe ERTÜRKGAZİ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSeptember 2006ABSTRACTIn this study, the cities built employing the grid planning in the earlyages have been evaluated by their social, intellectual and economicalaspects. The effects and the foundations of the grid planning, with thesocial, economical and intellectual reasons considered, have beenstudied through various civilizations' city examples built in differentgeographical regions. It has been investigated whether the gridplanning's relation established with Hippodamos and democracy wasutilized in other grid planned cities.As a result of this work, it has been observed that, since the beginning,grid planning has been implemented for very different needs anddemands related to social, intellectual and economical reasons. Theruled method of martial regulations by which the dominant regime hasmaintained its power, the grid plan that allowed the new settlements tobe planned rapidly, organized and easily, has found itself a vastapplication area from Egypt's worker cities to Urartu's craftsmen cities,the Greek city-states, Rome's garrisons and colonies, China's empirecities and to new American cities, before and after Hippodamos.Science Code : 803.1.101Key Words : Grid plan, geometry, city, ideology, architecture,Page Number : 133Adviser : Yrd.
