The examination of the 4th and the 5th grade students` selections of vocabulary items in the process of writing with respect to some variables

This study aims at the determination of both the words which are used byfourth and fifth grade students in primary schools and the frequency of these wordsin their writings. Forthermore, the utilized words are scrutinized with respect to somevariables such as sex, pre- school education, the educational level and jobs ofstudents? parents, family?s economic state, the number of siblings, the frequency ofreading newspapers and books at home or at school and so on.This is a descriptive study. The population of this survey embodies the fourthand the fifth grade students at the Foundation of Gazi University Private PrimarySchool, Ulubatlı Hasan Primary School, Baldudak Primary School and ÖrencikPrimary School.Findings have revealed that some kinds of words are made use of more oftenthan the others in three types of writing of the students. These types are informativeand narrative text and memories. The sort of speech of these words can be gradedfrom the most frequent to the least: verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions andprepositions. The total and different words in the three types of writing of the fourthand the fifth grade students have shown variety with regard to the sex of the subjects.The practised total and different words of the students coming from families withhigh economic state are more in number when compared with the students comingfrom families with middle or low economic state.All three applications have shown that the number of total words anddifferent words decreases when the number of siblings increases. It has been seenthat the subjects who read newspapers and books more than the others use more anddifferent words in their informative and narrative texts. It has also been found outthat subjects? writing diaries and stories are more effective than their writing ofletters, poems and other types in terms of the increase in the number of total anddifferent words.
