Conditions of teachers instructional materials usage in Turkish lessons at 4th and 5th grade levels in primary schools

The scope of this study is the classroom teachers of 4th and 5th grades working Sorgun, Yozgat. A questionnaire which was developed by the researcher was applied to 80 teachers who were selected randomly. The results related to the research can be summarised as fallows. Teachers mostly use the course textbook and the blackboard in Turkish lessons. The proportion of using other teaching materials is quite small. Within the first 10 years of teacher working experience and after their 20th year in work the rate of using materials decrease; that is, teachers use more teaching materials between the 10th and 20 year of experience. Almost all teachers are aware of the importance of using materials and they are developing teaching materials to be used in Turkish lessons. Among the reasons mentioned by the teachers for using materials the following are the least effective ones, "to enable the student to study individually", "to enable the student to study of independently of class", "to provide time to deal with different subject during the lessons by using teaching materials", "to provide a saving of time and effort by using the same materials again" and "to maintain discipline" Among the reasons of not using teaching materials, the most influential ones are "the school is short of the required materials" and "there exist no convenient environment to prepare materials at school". And other influential reasons are; "inefficiency of school's/classes' physical conditions", "the school's having inefficient library", "inconvenient of the number of students", "the huge amount of time required to prepare material", 'Turkish lesson is not suitable for using materials", "insufficient knowledge about the use of materials in Turkish programme" and " lack of in service training about teaching materials"Key Words: Educational Technology, Turkish Teaching
